The short answer: no. Baby blues can be called the mildest form of postpartum depression but it doesn’t need treatment like other forms of depression. Baby blues are very natural and nearly all women feel them after they give birth to a baby. Postpartum depression, on the other hand, is triggered due to a variety of reasons including family history of depression and it should be cured. Baby blues normally occur three to four days after giving birth. This is because of the fact that the bond the mother felt throughout the nine months of pregnancy is not the only bond the baby has now. There are other people who claim their share in this bond. After going through a traumatic period of pregnancy and labor, the mother often finds it difficult to cope with. However, the feeling goes away eventually after a few days when the baby starts growing up and there are so many things to look after that the mother doesn’t find time to feel baby blues anymore. Postpartum depression can linger on for a few months or even years after giving birth. This is because its causes are sometimes psychological as well as physical. Physical causes include hormonal changes and the change in the shape of the body. It takes some months to regain the older shape again. Postpartum depression can occur anytime during the first year of motherhood and is likely to come back in later pregnancies. Symptoms of baby blues are mild and not anything serious. They include mood swings, restlessness, anxiety and feeling of loneliness. Symptoms of postpartum depression are somewhat similar but more acute, like constant feeling of tiredness and lack of energy, a feeling of loss and not wanting to care for the baby as much as it’s expected of the mother, irritability, insomnia, loss of interest in almost everything including sex and other similar symptoms. You see postpartum depression is mainly triggered by psychological changes rather than physical changes. You need to know that baby blues is a condition which does not need any special treatment. Just make yourself comfortable at all times and try to be cheerful and positive about the whole scene. However, if your depression lingers on for a long time and there seems no end to the anxiety immediately see a doctor and seek help. |
